The first theme that is really obvious is that "love makes people do stupid things", for example, at the scene where Victor speaks French to impress Teresa. Normally, Victor would have been too shy to raise his hand to volunteer, much less fake speaking French. But he was willing to do it for Teresa and trying to impress her. And it was incredibly stupid of him to do that because he doesn't know how to speak French AT ALL.
The second theme is that "people will do anything for who they love". Victor signed up many classes JUST so he could see her more often and eventually impress her so that she would go out with him.
"Don't rely on magazines to impress people, just be yourself." Victor tried taking advice from Michael, who got the idea from GQ magazine that scowling can help impress and attract girls (by the way, that is the most stupid thing I've ever heard). He realizes that when he is more relaxed and less flustered, he could talk more calmly to Teresa and also impress her.
"Making good impressions"is also very important. As Victor tries to get Teresa to like him, he first figures out how to catch her attention and impress her. He tries to look everywhere for her but he seems to never be able to see her, finally at French class, he sees a chance and tries to impress her with French. And also, in the beginning of the story, she talks to Victor, and Victor replies with a stupid answer (eventually scolding himself inside). So it is very important to watch what you speak if you want to make a good impression.
So that is what I think the themes are for the story, 7th Grade, by Gary Soto.
